Episode 58---Intellectual Conventions and Chandra Free!

In this week's episode, Patrick, Socar, and Jeremy are joined by the talented Chandra Free ( aka. Spookychan), illustrator of "The God Machine".
Together they discuss their dream projects, a bit about conventions, and other stuff....

Make sure to subscribe to the Ninja Mountain Podcast on iTunes or we will be forced to ask Jeremy to attempt to pronounce your name during a future broadcast.... I heard him mispronounce "Smith" once. The boy's got talent...

To learn more about Spookychan's most excellent artistic offerings, head on over to her studio website.
Head on over to the Visual Artist Podcast Network to learn more about other great illustration programs!

Some conventions to check out!

A bunch of FRIENDS having a great time at Dragon Con....You could be too!

O_O Thanks. That Joey mask will haunt me for a while.

(it's so puckish!)

Those are some really disturbing photos. I think that's what Lovecraft was alluding to when he wrote of creatures that could drive men mad by merely seeing them!

Is this the 'We Hate Friends!" edition of the NM pod ;)

Nice to hear a new voice in CHandra, folks!

I was amused by all the fuss about saying Chandra's name right. The name is Indian and you're probably pronouncing it wrong anyway :D

Oh and you're all haters! Friends is the number one, coolest new show here!!!111 ;P

Hey Jan! Well, we've certainly pronounced YOUR name wrong several times.. ;D But I think anyway her parents pronounced it is the correct way, wouldn't you agree? :)

Good to hear from you, Andy - when the hell are YOU going to be on the show again???? Hmmmmm???

Jan- Actually, the way I [and my parents] pronounce my name is close to the way the Indians say it. Only they have more of a rolling of the tongue and more emphasis on the "cha" sound with a bit of that Indian inflection, i believe.

But my way of saying it, is closer than the "Sha" verion. [and you'd have an issue with you name if people bastardized it you're whole life. Even after telling them how to say it! -least i do... besides it's good to get the record straight, ya know? It's nice hearing my name since i don't hear it often.]

Andy- yay!

@Chandra - I was only jesting! I apologize for doubting you!

I think you pronounce it with a very american "a", but you're right - it's much closer than Shandra. ;)

Anyway, I do know your pain. My friends online and clients often think I'm a girl - that Jan is short for Janice.

Pronouncing it? Patrick is right, when they mentioned me on the show, it was never pronounced exactly as it should be. But it's ok, the german-like way they pronounce it is much better than some others.

And my surname is Pospíšil. I think nobody outside my country has an idea how to pronounce that. :D
(or spell it. I am yet to recieve a book where I'm spelled right in the credits)

I have to say, Friends are the WORST. I saw it last night--it was the episode where Ross spazzes out because shampoo and conditioner exploded in his purse. Rachel is trying to tell him something important, and he's blowing his top--screaming like a bird--over spilt hair-care products.

Seriously, doesn't he seem like exactly the sort of ineffectual, immature, frustrated, and surprisingly aggressive failure who'd turn around and beat his girlfriend or wife? What if Rachel had spilled the shampoo in his purse?

GOD, he is a creepy f***! He's like...a stalker, only Rachel never notices he's stalking, because he's Monica's brother, and has a sort-of-legitimate reason to follow her around all the time. GROSS!

Am I crazy, or what? Ha, ha. But I hate Friends, and especially Ross.

:DD

I've always enjoyed Ross geeking out about dinosaurs. But yes, he is a bit of a creep.

The weird thing is - I can't say I like any of the characters, but I still liked the show and we used to watch it with my roommates a lot.

I just like saying "Chanandalar Bong." ;-)

I had the same reaction as Jan. The Joey mask is deeply disturbing to behold. Never thought you could get such intense horror out of something so banal as Friends.

I just had a random thought, and felt I should bring it up. It has nothing to do with this particular show, rather NM as a whole. I was just thinking it'd be fun to do a weekly illustration challenge and see what everybody comes up with.
Who knows, it could lend itself to a critique the following week, haven't done one of those in a while.

This episode was absolutely hilarious. It brightened my day/night as I was toiling away at the drawing table. It was so random at times; nice and light-hearted. I found the portion on conventions and all of your experiences at them very interesting, especially because I’ll be having my first table at a con this year (terrified about it) for many of the reasons that were mentioned like being able to meet other artists face to face, getting into the art/comic community (besides on the internet), and to hopefully sell some prints of my work. I’ll be sure to take all of your suggestions for making it on a shoestring into account as I make my plans.

Thanks Lance! We had fun doing this one (as you can tell!)

And Preston - that's a good idea. We should certainly consider it. :D
