Episode 75 - This place is bugged!

While Jeremy is away at Gen Con, we have a return visit by the long lost Ninja Kieran Yanner! Kieran, Socar and MC Patrick answer some listener questions and spend way too much time talking about various bugs. It's a strange and beautiful exploration into the minds of three human illustrators, none of whom has the slightest idea of the horrors that await them...

Didn't get a chance to listen to the new podcast yet but I wanted to bring something to your attention. I've seen a lot of artists making posts warning about this person who wrote an article on 'how to hire an artist':

http://kaitol.com/how-to-hire-an-artist/

Many artists are very displeased by what he says and I'm curious to hear what you guys think about it. Should he be blacklisted? Does his article contain any merit at all? How do we deal with this? I personally would love to see artists themselves create their own 'how to hire an artist' but in ours it would underline things like "respect, fair pay/treatment, and welcoming negotiation".

Didn't see a spot where I could email you collectively, so I thought I would leave this in the comments. Ran across this today and thought it might be fuel for part of an upcoming episode...

Hey, Mike, I think the guy who wrote that article is only 16 years old...while it's a very foolish article, I'm not sure we're in the business of picking on kids, on NM.

The guy's lack of business savvy and experience shows through loud and clear in that article, though--right down to his, er, CREATIVE spelling. I would say the article speaks for itself, and what it says is "Hi! I have no idea what I'm doing!" ;-)

Sadly that's a pretty honest view of how most private enterprise is run. Like the second article pointed out. You're largely working for an industry built in a capitalist society. Unions and fair wage is bad. Extortion and slavery is good. I love the United States, love living here and love its people, but I'm realistic and don't see the world through rose colored lenses *dodges tomatoes thrown by patriots*

As you introduce fair treatment, said companies tap China, India etc. Its cheap labor. Now it happens with the art industry.

Turn the tables, don't be a victim. Take control. Play their game and play it better.

Like the first article mentioned "Ask for a splash screen with credit" Figure out how to make the situation just as valuable to you as it is to them. Money isn't the only value.

As for the publisher that originally wrote that article, I wouldn't black list him. But at least you now know where he stands and how you can manipulate the situation. He failed in showing his cards.

Make sure your deck is more comprehensive ^_^

Note: I think I may have come across as non-caring lol which isn't true! I don't agree with the behavior and don't practice that myself as my role as an art director - I believe firmly in "you pay for what you get".

In a perfect world we wouldn't have to deal with people with shitty ethics. But unfortunately we live in a world where people enjoy screwing over others. :-/

Sounds like Socar and Kieran have addressed this subject very well.

I have one slightly off-topic point to add, but only slightly. That is, there are some people in this world - not a majority, but a substantial group - who just don't understand one basic thing about humanity: just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD do something.

This guy's comment to the effect that if you don't like the way he operates then you don't like Capitalism is DEAD WRONG. It is anti-society and anti-civilization. People band together for the common good, NOT to screw each other whenever they can get away with it.

I'm not saying no one does this. I'm saying that you should never get a pass when you do it.

Morality exists, demonstrably, whether you are religious or not (I'm not) and it's what keeps society going. To actively advocate the exploitation of people for no other reason than that you can is childish, unethical and reprehensible.

Thanks everyone! I had no idea he was so young, I should have looked into it more. The first mention of this guy I saw was "blacklist this person!" so I may have been jumping to conclusions a little quickly, but that's why I asked, to get some perspective. What you've all said is very helpful. Whenever I hear about someone like this I get concerned and my mind goes off in a dozen different directions with how to deal with hearing these things. I guess the best thing is to just know that these kinds of people exist and to prepare myself so I know how to handle it if I have to deal with someone like that.

Thanks again everyone :)

Finally found the time to listen to this piece of podcawesomeness.

Why on earth would you kill spiders?!!
O_O

Spiders eat flies and other nasty insects, they're not harmful at all. If they ever bother me, I carry them outside or something. :(
Save spiders, keep insects out!

My previous attempt at leaving a comment dose not seem to have worked, so I am trying again.

I just want to thank you guys for answering my question, it was really helpful and I will be using that advice soon.
