Ninja Mountain Podcast #12 - Effortless efforts

Jon, Jeremy, Andy and Patrick talk about the effort put into illustrations, and how the time and money equation ties in to things. This leads into the practicalities of doing a good job on time, and somehow leads to a discussion on the fine art of the critique. Oh, who are we kidding - we're just all over the map this week. But it's a fun discussion, so please join us!

Just wanted to stop in and say how much I love the podcast. I'm a student at RISD hoping to go into fantasy/sci-fi illustration someday and really enjoy listening to y'all talk while I work. Keep up the good work! :)

Oh, and one little thing: I've been going through the old podcasts, and for some reason episode #6 won't download through itunes. Just thought you might want to know.

Thanks Noah! Glad to have you on board. I've looked at episode 6 on my itunes and it seems to be working - are you on mac or PC? (I'm mac). Thanks for the info.

Hey KiWi! We promise to rule with wisdom and love -- and an iron fist of JUSTICE!

Hey Patrick, I have the same problem as Noah on ITunes, just that one episode. Maybe it's a UK thang.

Oh and thank you for the plug at the end guys, muchly appreciated!! :)

You guys are the best. I just found out about the podcasts and have been listening to them all. All the topics, tips, advice and general experience you share is invaluable information that very few professionals are willing to share. And you're giving if for free!!! Even the jokes are good! :)

I'm still over podcast #4 but right now I'll have to say I'm already addicted and will always come back for more!

Thanks a lot! Go Ninjas!!!

I'm on a Windows. And sadly, Purdy, I'm in America. It's an international thing. ;)

It's not the end of the world (since I can always download it from your site), but it might be nice to have a whole set on itunes. :)

Also, topic suggestion: as a student, I'd love to hear about all of y'all's respective art educations and how you learned back in school to become an artist. Just a thought.

Thanks Atom, and welcome aboard, Caio! Don't know if the jokes are actually good, but we giggle easily so maybe that makes them funnier.

Noah - I'll see if I can figure anything out on Ep. 6. It shows up fine for me in iTunes, but of course that never means much... :) Curses, technical stuff sucks.

Good topic idea, too!

Good idea Caco! I'm considering listening to the entire series again myself. Its a brilliant alternative to music while I draw/paint/render artwork myself.
(looking forward to tomorrow's podcast 13)

It doesn't matter to me whether the work in my portfolio was published or commissioned. I will put in what a good variety of my best as well as the published work. But since I am also a print and licensing artist, other prints and licensed products with my personal work are on my site and visible elsewhere.

Thanks for all the comments, folks! I didn't go back to look at the comments on this episode for a while, so I'm sorry we didn't get back to you very quickly. ;)

Caco - glad you're listening while you work. I love to listen to podcasts while I render. Usually music while sketching/drawing because that takes more of my brain and language center (I think..) but most often podcasts for painting.

Atom - hope you liked 13!

Meredith - definitely it's a "whatever works best" thing. A lot of the problem we've seen in the past is just portfolios that don't match up to the work that clients commission. I'm certain you do NOT have that problem! :D

Loved how a couple of you just lost it a few times. I love hearing people laugh all the wa from the tummy. :D It's cool.

I too have not had a lot of luck with itunes. For me it seems they only start with the september ones.

i think the issue of undervaluing yourself and/or undercutting others as a beginner is a big one. I think i will just have to figure it out on my own since i have little to offer in that department yet.
